In Tune With the World: A Theory of Festivity
Published in Paperback by Saint Augustine's Pr (April, 1999)
Authors: Josef Pieper, Richard Winston, and Clara Winston
Average review score:

A plea for a more joyful life
Josef Pieper is probably best known for his book "Leisure: The Basis of Culture." This book on festivity is a good companion to that volume. Pieper discusses festivity's contrast to ordinary, everyday work, but points out that festivity involves more than the absence of labor. Real festivity also requires a quality of spirit which makes enjoyment possible, and that quality of spirit is love. He says, "One who loves nothing and nobody cannot possibly rejoice." The artificial festivals created by business can not possibly regenerate us the way festival is meant to do, because they are rooted in acquisitiveness rather than love and generosity of spirit. This is a beautiful book which will make you want to celebrate something truly festive!

Independent Action
Published in Paperback by American Book Publishing (March, 2002)
Authors: M. D. Winston, Karsten Rieger, and Bill LaForme
Average review score:

Amazing
This was the first novel I've read regarding Naval action during the American Revolution. I found this novel action packed and informative but most of all, very human. Jonathan Kincade is not an unreachable hero as are many of the characters that help weave this story. I found it very detail oriented when it came to describing the running of an 18th century war ship. Anyone who is a fan of Horatio Hornblower or of the heroic exploits of Admiral Nelson will find this first novel a great read. Little is known about Naval action during the American War of Independance and "Independant Action" gives insight into this facet of American History. I highly recommend this book.

The Last Days of Big Grassy Fork
Published in Hardcover by University Press of Kentucky (January, 2002)
Author: Hunter James
Average review score:

Fighting Urban Sprawl
This work should be of more than passing interest to those who more and more find themselves beset on every side by urban sprawl. The author sets out in many ways to preserve an old family homestead; but, more important, seeks ways to make the place profitable. His attempts are often hilarious, the more so when they fail, and they never lack meaning for others who share his feelings about the need for ways to protect ourselves from the menace of an urbanization that has rapidly got out of contol.

The Last Lion: Winston Spencer Churchill - Alone
Published in Audio Cassette by Books on Tape, Inc. (01 February, 1989)
Author: William Manchester
Average review score:

This masterwork is both a personal biography & history
at the same time. Churchill was already regarded as one of the greatest men of his time. This was due in no small part to his great sucess as a writer. Yet he was out of step, the times being what they were: a nation being led by craven, small brained men concerned only with the bottom line. I found myself talking back to the tape (in essence, talking to myself) at the fools running H.M.G. & the Foreign Office in the 1930's. It is as if Churchill is the only person of stature who knew Hitler & what his intentions were. But he is on the outside looking in. This was the "peace at ANY price decade" & not one for which England can be proud. Every country in Europe was sold out as the Greater Reich swallowed The Rhineland, Austria, The Sudetenland & Czechslovakia & threatened the rest including France. His fall from grace was in part in own fault. His obstinacy on India's Status & his support of Edward VIII, the future Duke of Windsor past the point of reason did not help him at all. His honor, honesty & vast output of writing in books & articles kept him in the public eye, until as we know, he was called to his finest hour.

Letters from Chickadee Hill
Published in Hardcover by Inspiration House Pubs (June, 1978)
Author: Winston O. Abbott
Average review score:

A book of utterly overwhelming magnitude.
This book is for anyone who finds spirituality in Nature. While short it is full of intense vivid images that each of us whom have lived in the country can relate to. Abbott forms a strong bond through that which is nature and that which is the spirit. Very poetic and lyrical and yet it flows with much ease.

Authors: Martin Buber, Nahum N. Glatzer, Paul Mendes-Flohr, Richard Winston, Clara Winston, and Harry Zohn

Buber's own words still resonate
This gem is worthy of 100 stars. Bubar's early writings, the work with Gustav Landaur and Franz Rosenweig in synthesizing "Ich und Du", as well as his editorial comments to writers of Der Jude. A true Passover Feast of wisdom and compassion, even including his letter to Gandhi. The forward by Paul Mendes-Flohr serves as an excellant background. As vital today as he was at the birth of the State of Israel.

A Little Joy, A Little Oy 2002 Day-To-Day Calendar

a little joy, and little oy is a complete JOY
An amazing calendar! Not your usual fare. A true keepsake! Loaded with facts, humor, quotes, literature, it's more a book than a calendar. I'm saving the pages!! I cannot imagine how much research went into this, but it's probably the finest calendar I've ever seen. I got it as a gift and have bought four more for family. I understand the book is even better, so I just ordered that! What a little gem. I'm so glad I found it. The variety is to be commended.
